  • Abstract
    The permanent-magnet synchronous machine is a robust, highly-efficient servo motor that has found wide application in variable-speed electric drive systems. As is the case for most AC machines however, smooth operation requires the implmentation of complex and costly control techniques.
    The situation has steadily improved with the continued deveopments in areas such as power electronics, microelectronics and computer engineering, which have led to the appearance of robust and cheaper control hardware. The result is that these brushless type machines are gaining in popularity as high-performance servo motors even in areas traditionally reserved for conventional DC machines.
    The permanent-magnet synchronous motor has not yet evolved as a standard off-the-shelf servo motor, because of the ongoing research for high-energy, permanent-magnet materials with improved magnetic and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the numerous possible configurations for the permanent magnet rotor, has meant that the machine exisits in several versions, each with its own unique properties and requiring unique control and power supply arrangements.
    In this work a sinusoidal permanent-magnet synchronous motor is designed and built with the help of a finite-element based, compute aided design package. An analytical method for determining the forces and electromechanical torques in the machine is developed.
    A mathematical model of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is developed and subsequently used for dynamic simulations using both ACSL and MATLAB simulation packages on a Sun workstation.
    An experimental rig is setup with the permanent magnet synchronous motor coupled to a purpose-built PWM inverter and controlled by an IBM compatible microcomputer. The machine's performance is analysed and a simple but effective postion-control strategy that does not involve the use of costly feedback sensors is developed.
